This is the “Process” described by Atom, when he created this site…
Welcome to my studio, I am an Abstract Expressionist painter, working exclusively in oil.
I use wide variety of approaches: direct, indirect, layering of glazes and textured impasto application of paint using wide variety of tools. I often do this in the same painting, and don’t have a particular do to technique. Because of the extremely slow drying time of the paint (up to a month) I am able to work on a painting directly wet in to wet for extended period of time. The downside of this is when the need arises of layering or grazing then of cause the wait is frustrating, but its part of the process.
Color: Color surely is the driving force, and choice of coloration and tonality is important, it does affect us emotionally whether we are aware of this or not, I lean more towards natural colors.
Medium: I grind my own oil paint, only highest quality pure pigments are used (no substitutes, fillers or additives), ground in Poppy-seed oil (pale, extremely slow drying oil, is light and versatile and makes for a beautiful paint that yellows the least out of all the oils available, is the only oil I use). Making your own oil paints is a time-consuming, laborious and tricky process, each pigment has its own unique qualities, however it results in the highest quality of color, and allows for a great versatility of technique. The actual painting medium is quite simple as well, Poppy-seed oil with addition of turpentine, (various textures and techniques are achieved by varying the amount of medium / solvent).
